Waltham firefighters along with Animal Rescue League personnel rescued a deer from the ice on that city’s Cambridge Reservoir. The deer had to be put down later in the day. That follows an unsuccessful attempt yesterday by North Shore firefighters, led by the Swampscott Fire Department, to rescue a dog at a house fire in that town. Both were dangerous and valiant efforts, that I witnessed. See my photos below.
It may seem like the same Swampscott skyline as one enters the town on Lynn Shore Drive, but look closer. What is it? Wow! Looming over beachfront homes like a giant butterfly, there it is. What is it? This is the giant indoor filming facility where Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups 2 will be shooting their pool scenes. That’s right, an in ground pool has been planted inside the structure, which sits just off the Swampscott football field at Blocksidge Field.

Dick & Sons barber shop, a north shore landmark, will be closing after 72 years in business. Dick Maniglia, an immigrant from Sicily, started the business in 1935. His sons Tony, Richie, Joey and Uncle Al Maniglia all worked here with dad. Dick, Al and Joey have since passed away, leaving only Tony and Richie. When asked about the closing, Richie would say only that it “was time”. Above caption from my 2007 photo essay entitled, “Last Shave”.
