Remembering the September 11, 2001 Terror Attacks.

I, like many, was watching one of the morning national news shows when the unthinkable events that would change our nation forever commenced. First, one plane, and then another crashed into the World Trade Center towers. I went in to work my Boston Herald news photography shift shortly thereafter. The updated and ever-changing news reports showed one, if not both of the ill-fated airliners, departed from Boston’s Logan airport. I started toward the airport. It would take me over an hour to get from the Herald’s South End headquarters to Logan as most workers vacated the city at the same time. Cell phone service, due to heavy usage, was barely working in our area. I arrived on top of Logan’s Terminal B parking garage to look down at a quiet airport as other media members arrived. We all noticed when an F15 fighter jet roared overhead. It was at about that time that I received word that Peter West, the father of Herald colleague Matthew West, had been working in one of the WTC towers when the planes hit. Cell service was still very spotty and every once in a while, through the day, I would check in with Matthew and another co-worker/friend Matt Stone to find out any information about Mr. West. We all thought that the heavy confusion of the day and the bad cell service, etc. were the reasons we had not received information on the whereabouts of Mr. West. We are a close bunch at the Herald photography department and as the hours passed, we would contact each other  to find any information we could about the West family, so as to not bother them. Peter west, a loving father, husband, brother, uncle and friend, died as he was going about his work on the 104th floor. A loving eulogy by his son Matthew would follow at the New Jersey funeral. Here is a link to the eulogy and to the Peter West memorial website. My photos below show F15 flying over Logan and a state police car guarding an American Airlines plane in the hours after the attacks. They also show one of the first jets to arrive at Logan after the four day closure of the airport. That arriving jet, a DHL cargo jet, is framed by an American flag flying above Winthrop. A few days later there was a very emotional prayer service at City Hall plaza that was attended by many area pilots and flight attendants. God bless to Mr. West and to all the victims of that horrific day. Peace on earth!

While I was able to salvage tonight with a decent photo, tonight’s haze and cloud deck made tonight’s Supermoon, a super bust. Here is tonight’s, at the top, and then other Supermoons from Boston’s past, with the date embedded in the photo.

Two Boston firefighters die in Back Bay blaze. My photos.

A very sad day. Here are some scenes that I witnessed today. May firefighters Edward Walsh and Michael Kennedy rest in peace. Great job by their fellow firefighters to try and rescue them.
My statement regarding the photo of neighbor Tom Brady watching the fire from rooftop.

Air Force One photo sequence flying into Boston

Here is the photo sequence from late afternoon yesterday as Air Force One was on short final approach over South Boston, flying into Boston’s Logan International Airport. I had some folks questioning whether this was real or a photo fake, with the skyline of Boston so close. The one photo in the middle of this sequence was “retweeted” on Twitter several hundred times. It seems people like this amazing airplane, and see it as a source of American pride, as opposed to another divisive political topic. Shot from Deer Island with an 1120mm lens.

This photo was snapped from my Winthrop home, out our 3rd floor window, at approximately 7:23pm-ish tonight. Thanks to the internet, one can find out what type of plane, destination, and airline, etc. This is an Atlas Air 747-400. It is going 560mph at 36,000 feet. It is going from JFK-Frankfurt, Germany.

A tennis passing of local interest

I apologize for being late with this. Last week I received a call from a relative of an elderly tennis champ that I had photographed in 2002. She had said that her 102 year old relative Dan Bushnell had passed away in March and that she was interested in obtaining a print of the photo that I had snapped. Dan was a tennis champion well into his 90’s. He was 91 when I photographed him competing against a 90 year old at Longwood in Chestnut Hill. Here is the original caption from that day.  Sr. Tennis player Dan Bushnell, age 91 of Massachusetts at right, congratulates Albert Gaskill age 90 yrs 10 months, of North Carolina, who Bushnell called “Young Fella” after Gaskill beat him in the semi-finals at Brookline,MA. Here is Dan’s obituary.

I snapped these photos tonight starting at 5:41pm. I used an 800mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter.

He won consecutive Pulitzers in the mid 1970’s while covering the streets as a Boston Herald news photographer. One was awarded for a horrific scene as a fire escape collapsed during a fire rescue in Boston’s Back Bay. The other was awarded for a photo he snapped of Ted Landsmark, an African American man who happened upon an anti busing protest and was assaulted by an American flag-wielding protester. He is now out with a new book, available online or in book form. Before Yellow Tape, A Pulitzer Prize Winner’s Fire Images, is available here.
