I photographed smoke coming out of the cargo hold today as Massport firefighters, with a backup from the Boston Fire department, first investigated and then doused the morning fire. I was at the scene today, in Boston’s Fort Point Channel, where a woman somehow ended up in the very chilly water. A Boston police officer jumped into the water, stabilized her, and then waited for Boston firefighters and a police boat to effect a rescue. Boston Herald’s Matt Stout has the story here along with more of my photos and a dramatic video by passerby Hal Munger. Great teamwork by the first responders. First, a fire on Glen St. in Somerville just after 8am, and then an afternoon fire in a home in Newton. The above photo is from Somerville, while the below photos and video link (in red) are from Newton.
I was on a stakeout for the Herald in Worcester all day and I was hungry at about 6:45am. I plugged in “best breakfast Worcester” into my Blackberry and the Kenmore Diner on Franklin St. popped up. Off I was to grab my veggie omelet. I thought, hey, this area looks familiar. Could it be that this area was the site of the Worcester fire tragedy at the cold storage facility? And then all of a sudden, all the emotions came back, under that damn bridge. They, of course, knocked the building down and for those who do not know, a fire station and a beautiful memorial to the firefighters who died that day has been erected. Below is a photo I snapped a few days after that horrible day as firefighters honored the dead.
Dark smoke from a high-rise roof fire at 1 Memorial Dr. in Cambridge provided some some scary moments to early morning commuters today. The fire was extinguished quickly and no injuries were reported. The morning commute was impacted on Memorial Dr. and the Longfellow Bridge from the 6:20am fire. I photographed at a frozen fenway park today as the Boston police and Boston fire department hockey teams squared off. This was a very good brand of hockey, as both teams have former high school, college and drafted pros on the ranks. The game was cleanly played with Boston’s finest edging out the hosemen. Boston cop Frank St. Peter, in top photo at right, needed a few stitches above his eye after a 2nd period collision. Others in my photos include BPD skaters Jeff Connolly and Charlie Daniels and Boston firefighters, goalie Mike Sweeney and Ryan Maher among others. Last, but of course not least, is retired Boston firefighter/fire investigator Bill Noonan manning the camera in bottom photo.
This was a sad news event to cover for sure as word of the death of firefighter James Rice started to spread to working firefighters at 5 Hancock street. See my photos below.
I knew something was wrong when I awoke from my sleep the morning of February 20, 2003. When I flipped on the television every network news channel was broadcasting the same crude photos and videos showing some type of escape from a burning building. I was stunned to find out the early fatality stats on this fire. First it was nine dead, then 12 dead. It would eventually reach a staggering number of 100 people who went to the West Warwick, R.I. nightclub that night never to return. I was dispatched to the scene by the Boston Herald photo desk morning editor Arthur Pollock. Staffers Matt Stone and Robert Eng had already been there in the very early morning hours and done yeoman’s work. I remember standing next to WCVB cameraman Curtis Bailey as we trained our lenses on the first responders trying to locate victims. I looked at him after about 20 minutes of seeing body bag after body bag coming out of the burned out shell of a building and in disbelief said: “Curtis, this has to be more fatalities than the 20 that (the authorities) had stated.” He said: “Mark, it’s up to 30 according (his) reporter.” I also remember feeling sympathy for not only the victims and the victims’ families, but also for the brave first responders who were seeing “battlefield” type numbers in that hell hole. here are three of the many photos I snapped that morning.
I awoke to a pager message stating that a gasoline tanker had overturned at Sweetser circle in Everett in the early morning hours, and had ignited three apartment buildings and several cars. My photos, below, ran the next day in the Boston Herald.
(09/23/10-Revere,MA) John Bottari hugs his cat “Piddles” after Revere fire chief Gene Doherty handed the cat to him during a 3-alarm fire Thursday afternoon. The fire started at 16 Dana St and spread to a dwelling on North Shore Rd. The cat survived with minor dehydration and some minor burns to the paws.
