Firefighter David Atherton did not die in the line of duty. That fact didn’t matter this morning to his fellow Stoneham firefighters and his brothers and sisters at the Boston Fire Dept., as they saluted and escorted his body from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Atherton was accidentally shot and killed by a lifelong friend. See that Boston Herald story here.

Boston firefighters worked a hot fire yesterday on Waverly St., in Roxbury. The Dudley Sq. crew, comprised of Ladder 4 and Engine 14 and Safety Chief H-1, was first on the scene. Here are some of my photos from yesterday, and here is the Boston Herald story.

Chelsea police officer Paul McCarthy was awarded a medal yesterday for his life saving actions on Saturday, atop the Tobin Bridge, according to the Chelsea police website. A man had allegedly assaulted his wife and was on the run when a Chelsea cop spotted him and initiated a brief pursuit, that ended when the man jumped from the upper deck of the bridge, only to get caught in construction safety netting on the lower deck. Here is my original post, with photos, from the incident. Below are more of my photos of officer McCarthy in action on the Tobin. Photos were snapped during my Saturday shift as a Boston Herald staff photographer.

Pictureboston returns after brief hiatus

It has been a busy several weeks of the new year since my father, Robert Garfinkel, passed away on January 14. He was a great guy and he, along with my mother, sister and wife Laura Crimaldi, have always been very supportive of my photo work. Animal rescues, and animal’s in winter scenes, have dominated my photo work so far this year. Boston firefighter Sean Coyle rescuing a Husky that was stuck on the ice at Southie’s Sugar Bowl, a dog enjoying a Back Bay snowman, and Framingham firefighters helping to save several cows after a barn collapse, have been my highlights so far. Thanks, as always, for your support.

Dark smoke from a high-rise roof fire at 1 Memorial Dr. in Cambridge provided some some scary moments to early morning commuters today. The fire was extinguished quickly and no injuries were reported. The morning commute was impacted on Memorial Dr. and the Longfellow Bridge from the 6:20am fire. See more here with the Herald’s Matt Stout.
