My “Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” Fifteen Years On.

Last week signaled the passing of fifteen years since I photographed an Air India 747 passing directly over the former headquarters of the Boston Herald and “through” a winter’s half moon. The photograph was snapped at approximately 3:30pm on January 2, 2001 using one of the first digital cameras that the Herald had, and a 600mm lens with a 2x teleconverter extender. That made the lens a 1200mm F8. The photograph went on the front page of the Herald on January 3rd and the Associated Press picked up and transmitted it worldwide the same day. The next day over 50 newspapers worldwide ran the photo, with the London Independent, The Irish Times and a paper in Hong Kong being some of the many papers who ran it on the front page. It felt great making such a splash and a connection. I started receiving letters from all over the world about the photo. I even received one letter that was delivered to the Herald in an envelope that simply read: To the person who photographed the jet thru the moon, Boston,MA USA. I am still amazed that the letter made it to me. Thanks to the workers at the main post office at Fort Point Channel, Boston for that one. The photo continued on to numerous magazines and many books, 2 of which are seen below. I did not know what airline it was or where it was headed until I received a call from the FAA in Nashua,NH. They asked me what time it was that I photographed it and told me that it was Air India flying from London Heathrow to JFK in NYC. I made lots of friends worldwide. Thanks, as always for being a viewer of my photos and this website.

Great weekend for Boston moon/aviation photos!

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday offered great glimpses of the moon as jet traffic flew by. First, Friday, a Swiss International Airbus A-330 cooperated, then Saturday, a departing British Airways Boeing 747 obliged, and then Sunday saw Boeing 737’s from South West and Sun Country. The weekend fun ended shortly before midnight last night, as a privately owned Moroccan jet charter by the name of Dalia Air, flew through at 35,000′.

24 hours and 5 minutes later…

Yesterday afternoon, at 4:22pm, I photographed British Airways FL BA197, a 747-400, traveling at 500 kts and 38,000 ft above my driveway in Winthrop, Massachusetts, with a Tail # G-CIVW, flying from London to Houston. I used a 1600mm lens on a tripod at 1/640th of a second at F11 at 10,000 ISO (asa). Tonight, 24hrs and 5 minutes later, I photographed the same flight number, this time at 38,000′, and traveling a little slower, at 443 kts. This time I used the photography method called “panning.” I used a tripod, 1600mm lens, and an ISO(ASA) of 1250. My camera settings were  1/15th of a second at F11. The plane was also a 747-400 but the tail # was G-BYGD. It is amazing that tonight’s flight was only 5 minutes later than last night’s, given that this bird is 3300 miles from London. Below top is last night’s flight. Below bottom is tonight’s flight.

Photo sequence is of Air France FL 333, a Boeing 747 en route from Boston to Paris. Photos shot with a Canon 800mm F5.6 lens, with a Canon 1DX camera. 1/500th of a second at F8 at 1000asa (ISO). Camera’s mirror was in the lock-up position and camera was on a tripod. As seen from Winthrop,MA., at 9:08pm tonight as the jet climbed out of  4000 feet “through” the full Supermoon.

This photo was snapped from my Winthrop home, out our 3rd floor window, at approximately 7:23pm-ish tonight. Thanks to the internet, one can find out what type of plane, destination, and airline, etc. This is an Atlas Air 747-400. It is going 560mph at 36,000 feet. It is going from JFK-Frankfurt, Germany.

Logan tower is aglow in red during tonight’s sunset. Earlier this evening, there was a rare visit by a Saudi Arabian 747SP. A moonrise, a few days ago, is also seen below. Thanks for viewing my photos.

Of course I’m joking, but check out this photo I snapped last evening at Logan. My 800mm lens captured this jumbo jet just after it landed and was beginning its taxiing to Terminal E. The trooper was performing his/her runway check and patrol.
