Bruins Clean Lockers, Clear Out, Prepare for Golfing Season

I had the unenviable assignment yesterday of  photographing the all too familiar “clean out yer locker and scram!” day on Causeway Street. The Bruins players were all gentleman as no less than 10 cameras followed their every move, while scribes were asking the two words that all of us wanted answered, that is, what happened? Here are a few photos shot with a Canon EOS Mark 111 camera and a 16-35mm zoom lens. My Herald photo gallery can be seen here.

A Brief, Unscientific Review of the Canon Powershot G11

Just got my Canon Powershot G11. Very cool! It will go nicely with my Canon arsenal that includes both an 800mm and a 14mm lens, Canon EOS 1D Mark11N and Mark111 cameras and many other lens. While all the above serve a specific purpose, this new addition is just plain fun. While I am not going to write an in depth, technical review of this gem, I will give you my first impressions. To begin with it is far more comfortable in one’s hand than Canon’s prior powershots in the G-series, thanks to a newly designed grip. It has better image quality by way of  improved noise performance, a 10 megapixel CCD sensor, an image stabilized 28-140mm F2.8-4.5 equivalent zoom lens and a 2.8″ tilt/swivel LCD back. The tilt back is a cool feature that is great when one needs, for instance, to shoot from an unorthodox position like the “hail mary”, where one might have the camera held high above head level. The camera is small, think pregnant cigarette pack, great for those aspiring paparazzi among us. Here are some of my first photos with my new toy. The following were shot at 400ISO speed.

Me with auto white balance and settings of 400iso 1/80th of a second at F3.2 as seen in a mirror self portrait.

Cosmo the cat...400ISO 1/60th of a second at F2.8 with auto white balance

Good shot of the tilt/swivel back as seen in a mirror self portrait.

Here are my photos of Tom at an ’08 press conference to support Best Buddies which, according to their website, is an organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was founded in 1989 by Anthony Shriver. This year’s fundraising festivities include the Boston to Hyannis Port  Best Buddies Challenge biking event on June 5. To get involved or to donate go here.

Here, Tom Brady poses for a photo with Crystal Stewart, Miss USA from Texas and Hillary Cruz, Miss Teen USA from Colorado.

A Footbridge, a Governor, a Team Owner, many E-mails & one Photo

In light of revelations that e-mails released yesterday show that some state workers may have felt pressured by the owners of the Patriots and by the Governor’s office to act on a proposed footbridge next to Gillette Stadium, I thought it apropos to show this photo I snapped in March of 2009. I just so happened to stumble on these two powerful men on March 26, 2009. Robert Kraft arrived first and then Governor Patrick for what appeared to be a morning breakfast at “XV Beacon” shortly before 8am. Here, they are seen walking out of the restaurant toward the State House. Photographed for the Boston Herald.

Of course I’m joking, but check out this photo I snapped last evening at Logan. My 800mm lens captured this jumbo jet just after it landed and was beginning its taxiing to Terminal E. The trooper was performing his/her runway check and patrol.

Photos of Tasered Bus Passenger in NH drama

Sometimes  things aren’t always what they appear to be. Two bus passengers were arrested at the scene of Thursday’s bus/”bomb” standoff in Portsmouth, NH, but the man who was at the center of this, a foreign national from Africa with a limited english vocabulary etc, was NOT arrested. John Smolens was one of two men arrested. He for resisting arrest for his behavior exiting the bus, and the other man for obstructing justice. Here you will see Smolens exiting the bus with his hands fully extended in the air and then his hands come down. He is then hustled, in hand cuffs, to a waiting cruiser. A few seconds later, pants still unbuckled for reasons unknown, he is moved toward the parking garage with the other passengers. Here is my Boston Herald photo gallery from that day.

NH Bus/”bomb” Drama Ends: Photography in the Dark.

A very long standoff that purportedly involved hostages and explosives, ended last night. I arrived in Portsmouth at approximately 1pm and saw this to fruition. The grand finale photos, if you will, were the first photos that I can ever remember where I did not see the subject for the majority of time. For all you photography fanatics out there, my setting on this surrender photo was: “Film Speed” 3200asa, Shutter Speed 1/20th of a second at F5.6 aperture with a Canon 800mm 5.6 on a tripod. The light that is shining on the suspect is from police and street lights. A Boston Herald photo gallery is seen here.
